Rundll32.exe: Is It Safe?

Rundll32.exe: Everything You Need to Know

What is Rundll32.exe?

Rundll32.exe  is a legitimate executable file developed by Microsoft and is an essential Windows file. This means that the file is essential to the running of the operating system and should not be removed. The exception to this is if you have a file under the same name which is actually a virus in disguise.

The file stands for Run Dynamic Link Library32-bit and is used to run programs held in Dynamic Link Library files (DLL). DLL is a common set of instructions that is used by many Windows programs, therefore, the file is used to run these programs when called upon. This is why you may spot a number of rundll32.exe processes running in Task Manager at the same time.

Is rundll32.exe Safe?

The legitimate rundll32.exe file is safe and should not be removed because it can cause errors for any programs that require the file to run.  The legitimate file will be located in C:\Windows\System32 folder. You can find where the file is located by right-clicking on rundll32.exe in the Processes pane in Task Manager and selecting Properties. If the file is located anywhere other than C:\Windows\System32 folder, then it is most likely a virus in disguise.

If you have a Rundll32.exe file is that located in the right place but is causing problems then the file may be corrupted or damaged. These problems can be error messages or abnormal computer performance which ceases if you end the Rundll32.exe process in Task Manager.

If you fall into this category you should run the System File Checker tool to scan your computer for missing or damaged files. This tool is built into all modern Windows systems and can be run by using the following method (Windows 8/10):

Press Win+X and select Command Prompt (Admin)
Select Yes on the User Account Control (UAC) prompt
Type SPC/scannow and press Enter on your keyboard.

You can also manually update your file to the latest patched version by downloading it from Microsoft Update Catalog.

The rundll32.exe file is needed for Internet Explorer to function properly so if you are receiving error messages when using Explorer, this could be a sign you have an infected file. Infected versions of the file can also block important programs like Task manager and some settings in Control Panel. A known error message associated with the file is:

Runtime Error!

Program C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe

How to Remove a rundll32.exe Virus

If you suspect you have a virus disguised as rundll.exe then it needs to be removed. The best way to do this is to use an anti-virus program that can properly identify the virus and remove all versions of it from your computer. This is the fastest and most efficient way to remove the virus since the software will already have a catalog of known viruses to match it with and will automate the removal process. Often removing viruses can be difficult, especially when they hijack important system processes and restrict your access to essential security programs.

There are so many of these files, which often have strange names, that some users are concerned that they may be viruses or other malware. Here's a good example of some as they look in Task Manager:
